How to Hit a Driver Straight

Everyone loves the idea of “Grip it and rip it”.  It’s easier said than done because when people do this, they generally come unstuck because they will forget essential steps to hitting long straight drives.  Professional players do not hit golf shots through pure power, they have a technique that allows them to turn through the golf ball with power.  You can start to do this by positioning your 60% of your weight on your right foot and leaning slightly to golf club so when you swing away from the golf ball, you are allowing your body to transfer weight efficiently from the power-loaded right foot through the golf ball onto your left foot.  Have your feet slightly further apart when hitting the driver because you will need a lower center of gravity for better balance.  Align the golf ball with the inside of your foot which is closest to the target so when you swing through the ball, you are aiming to hit it on the upswing which generates a better ball-flight.  Keep your head straight throughout the whole process because it allows you to keep the power flowing through your body instead of a moving head.

You need to make sure that your shoulders are aligned with the target because you may begin to hit a slice or a hook depending on which way they are facing.  Make sure your feet are aligned with your shoulders and completely relax your body.  When you take the club away from your body you need to make sure that the club is positioned towards the target when you reach the top. Having a club pointing left or right at the top will generally mean that the golf ball will not travel in the correct direction.  Hitting the driver further is made even easier if you’re able to rotate your hips and shoulders a lot.  Try to hit the gym and start working on your back muscles so you can become more flexible.  Try to turn your hips and and shoulders 90 degrees when you swing the club backwards because your body creates a recoil effect and you’re able to drive through the ball to generate more distance.  This is one golf swing that needs to be exaggerated to the most fluent motion from it.  Making sure you take a big controlled swing is a key part of hitting a driver longer and straighter.
